Identifying local opportunities

Thus far, I’ve been researching and identifying very broad, generalized opportunities for a possible business model. While that helps me in my brainstorming process, it’s time to start looking at what needs must be met locally. Since I’m a reporter for The Gainesville Sun, I’ve decided to go through their archives and see what opportunities exist here in the Gator Nation.

·      In this article, the author discusses the tragic loss against Kentucky and how Gator football needs a lot more work than originally thought. What should’ve been an easy win for the Gators ended up being a loss in which fans realized we need to be bigger, faster and stronger.
·      The problem is that our offensive line needs improvement and our team doesn’t have a pass rush.
·      It’s clear who has the problem – the Gator football team.
·      This opinion article discusses how we’ve haven’t been discussing the threat of heat and flooding in Gainesville.
·      The problem is that our air current has been “blocked,” which means it’s halted and stopped moving. In addition, the rising temperatures can cause stronger hurricanes and more flooding.
·      Gainesville’s geography is experiencing the problem, thus so are its citizens.
·      Nonprofit group Public Citizen is petitioning for more regulations for construction workers that build in the extreme Florida heat.
·      The problem is that many construction workers can’t escape the heat and experience dehydration and heat strokes.
·      Constructions workers experience this problem.
·      Cars that drive themselves are becoming less of the future and more of reality. However, the computers are still experiencing some problems that don’t make autonomous driving completely safe.
·      The vehicles have trouble merging in heavy traffic and unprotected left turns.
·      Automotive companies that build/sell autonomous cars are experiencing this problem.
·      The City Commissioners approved a 2 percent electric rate increase in July, and citizens are not happy about it. Prior to the raise, GRU had the highest electric rate in the entire state, and now it just got higher.
·      The problem is that the Commissioners board cannot agree on a plan that would satisfy citizens and GRU.
·      Many people are experiencing this problem, but mostly citizens (such as myself). The board of Commissioners are facing the most backlash from this problem.

  1. Hi Kristen!
I enjoyed reading over your blog post. For my assignment, I actually tied in one local issue into all five of my articles (I don't know if that was what I was supposed to do, but I did that!). I really liked the opportunity you proposed in the third article. I think people in general that work outside are prone to heat strokes and it can be very dangerous. I worked for Chick-fil-A back in high school and I had to take orders outside in almost 100 degree weather and it was brutal. I think this is a feasible opportunity because something can be actually done for these construction workers. The other opportunities you have proposed sound very difficult to manage and finding something to combat those issues may be a more of a challenge. All in all, I think you did very well in sorting out your opportunities with your chosen articles!

  2. Hi Kristen,
I think your post was my favorite of all the posts I have read. I chose local news as well but I got my info from the independent alligator. The Kentucky loss was a horrific event and I personally am still not over it. I was not aware that Gainesville was being affected by changing weather conditions but this makes me nervous.

  3. Hello Kristen. I would like to capitalize on the UF vs Kentucky game since this was the article that interest me most. It is a shame that we could not continue the streak of beating Kentucky, and it really sucks because the Gators lost while I attend the school. The Gators are not where we all hoped they would be and it shows there is a lot of room still to improve.

  4. Hey Kristen, I think that a lot of people and local articles will be critical of the football team here after that game vs Kentucky. I think a lot of people thought it was a forgone conclusion that we were going to win because of the long streak and the hype around the new coaching staff etc. I think that With time Mullen will be able to get these guys into the best they can be. He is still installing his methods and system in and it may take a little time before everything is perfect.
