Testing the hypothesis

1.     My opportunity I would like to pursue, as of right now, is within the medical marijuana industry. Currently, 31 states have legalized medical marijuana and it’s a booming business even recreationally. However, there’s only one licensed dispensary here in Gainesville. For a city that’s home to one of the biggest hospitals in the state, there should be more effortless access to marijuana for patients.
2.     “The dispensary in Gainesville does not have a wide variety of THC/CBD products and does not deliver products to patients because they’re concerned about the opportunity costs and breaking legalities.”
3.     Testing the who: Outside of our community, there are definitely dispensaries in other Florida cities that do not meet the needs of every patient. It’s important to be inclusive of every patients’ specific needs and symptoms.
Testing the what: The boundaries of the need include having a wide variety of products in a store’s inventory. Combinations of different strains and different doses/chemicals have different effects on patients, and a dispensary needs to be able to cater to every patient’s needs. Also, what if a patient is feeling extremely ill and they can’t find the energy or will to drive and get it? A delivery system allows for more customers and more money through tips. Dispensaries are scared to be caught driving with technically an illegal drug, but as long as they carry their credentials and stow the marijuana safely and correctly, delivery systems would be very beneficial.
Testing the why: Here, I’ll have to find the most cost efficient way to have a large inventory, but also follow every law surrounding the business. The “why” is all about knowing the rules and following them while spending the least amount of money.
4.     For my interviews, I couldn’t find anyone who has a medical marijuana license, but was able to talk to people that are familiar with the industry and its benefits. They all agreed there’s a need locally for more dispensaries, and that the delivery system would bring more customers and money. However, two of the interviewees weren’t sure how high the demand is for another dispensary here. The other three thought an opportunity exists because Shands Hospital treats many different types of patients. However, everyone I interviewed worried that with this venture, I could run into some legal licensing trouble and would need a medically trained team to help run the dispensary. After speaking with them, I think my opportunity does exist, but whether or not it will succeed is unknown.

  1. Hi Kristen,
This is quite the controversial topic these days with the legalization of medical marijuana, but I found it impressive that you decided to pursue the opportunity out there as helping patients heal. With the basis of having Shands Hospital here in Gainesville, it leads me to question their ability to heal people versus the ability of medical marijuana. I think that it is obvious that the biggest issue in your opportunity is the legality of things, but as time passes I believe people will start to act on this. With medical marijuana only being legalized in Florida back in 2016, there is still a lot of questions that need to be answered so that people like you do not run into legal issues.

  2. Hi Kristen,
I thought your blog post was well written and you conducted your interviews well. I also think the dispensary idea is very good because the weed industry is one of the fastest growing industries in America. The fact that Gainesville does not have a dispensary is very strange to me as well. I have a friend with a medical marijuana license and has to get his medication shipped in the mail which is very inconvenient.

  3. Hi Kristen,
This issue is a big debate going on right now and I think more people are getting on board with the legalization of medical marijuana with people who need it for medical treatment. I think that a delivery service would be kind of tough to do as it could encounter problems with the police if one was too get pulled over on a delivery. I think that it would be tough to pull off but could happen.

  4. Hi Kristen!
I enjoyed your topic of choice because I think there is so much that medical marijuana can do for science and the medical field in general. Though I like your idea I think that the delivery idea can go sideways because it can cause safety issues for the driver and bring extra attention from police. Having a lot of marijuana on you at one time will make thieves eyebrows raise as they think they found a quick come up.
